Call for Papers & articles for the first issue
of Lonaard Magazine
The Use of Traditional Arts, Crafts, and Skilled
Workers in Contemporary Arab Architecture

Traditional arts and crafts, such as ceramics, calligraphy, woodworks, and others used to be integral parts in traditional Arab architecture. Such arts and handicrafts were associated with deep-rooted traditions passed from one generation to another and formed art masterpieces produced by skilled workers across the ancient Arab world. With the changing trends of architecture in the Arab world in the age of globalisation, and the rapid drift towards international influences, such arts as well as the skilled workers' careers have become under threat.
This issue of Lonaard magazine aims to bring this matter to the front stage. The intention is to stress the importance of such arts in the production of an architecture that derives its roots from an authentic origin central to its culture. For this, it is pivotal to raise important questions about the reality of these arts and crafts in the Arabic and Islamic world, and how deep such crafts are currently used or associated with the spatial organisation of buildings. Are they used superficially or as integral parts of space, architecture and building technology?
Themes & Research Areas
To bring these arts and handicrafts under much scrutiny, we invite scholars, experts, and professionals to engage in rigorous research and to submit articles and papers for our first issue of Lonaard Magazine, within these main themes:
Traditional fine arts and crafts – on the theory level
- To investigate how central traditional arts are to building technology between the past and the present.
- To trace the use of arts and crafts in traditional buildings, with examples from history.
- To Assess arts and crafts in buildings, their aesthetic aspects and to conduct analysis on the level of principles.
- To investigate current situation of these arts and crafts, how they feature in tradition and modernity discourse.
- To study current prevailing theories associated with traditional arts and crafts.
- To explore schools of thought and theories on the use of these arts and crafts in contemporary architecture.
- To conduct comparative review to schools of thought across the Arabic Islamic world as far as these handicrafts are concerned.
- To review current centres and workshops, with an account on obstacles and achievements.
Design and Practice level
- How do these arts and crafts feature in today’s practice around the Arab world, preview of examples.
- To discuss methods that can be done to promote these traditional crafts as a way of living for valued craftsmanship?
- To discuss how these arts and traditional crafts may be under threat today.
- To explore the relation between fine arts and conservation of historic buildings, methods, strategies, etc.
Conservation level
- To review of important buildings under threat and need for restoration using such traditional arts and crafts.
- To review case studies and techniques used.
- To investigate a worldwide successful experience with cross reference and examination.
Education, Institutions and workshops
- To review outstanding efforts across the Arab world to preserve a traditional art or craft or related profession.
- To examine conventional or contemporary methods to teach these arts in research centres and workshops.
- To discuss efforts to preserve skilled workers career and relevant socio-cultural issues.

Deadline for abstracts: September 01, 2009
Full paper submission: December 15, 2009
Submission and Relevant Information
Abstract submissions should be approximately 500 words and must be in English or Arabic. Abstract and full paper submissions should be sent in MS Word or PDF document format. Abstracts should be e-mailed to lonaardmail@lonaard.com Full paper submissions should adhere to the following guidelines:
- The article should not exceed 2500 words.
- The use of references should adhere to proper academic practise.
- Articles should be supported with clear photographs and clearly stated references.
- Illustrations, maps, & tables, should be inserted within the text and clearly explained.
- The article should be the authentic work of the writer/co-writers. Any previously published material in part or whole will be rejected.
- The writer can choose between writing in Arabic or in English, as the issue will be edited in both languages. However, whichever language used, competence is essential and articles with many errors or misuse of language may be declined.
- Abstracts and articles should contain author(s)the name(s), academic rank or title, institution or place of work.
